Variations of the Mexican Coffee Cocktail

Like any coffee cocktail, you can play the role of a scientist as you experiment with different ingredients.

  • Consider using a reposado tequila for more of a caramel flavor that'll be a touch sweeter than silver or blanco tequila.
  • Do you want your Mexican coffee to have something with a little bit more depth and complexity? Go ahead and welcome mezcal to the party instead of tequila for a delightfully smokey coffee.
  • Add a touch of nutty flavor to your coffee using a half ounce of hazelnut or almond liqueur, or go sweet with caramel or chocolate liqueur.
  • Easily sweeten your coffee with a splash or two of simple syrup.
  • Make your coffee on the creamy side by adding traditional coffee creamer or a splash of Irish cream.

Garnishes

A Mexican coffee cocktail looks fabulous with a grand garnish or one that's quite simple.

  • Sweeten up your garnish with some chocolate. Swirl chocolate syrup down the inside before adding your ingredients, or sprinkle grated chocolate or chocolate shavings on top of the whipped cream.
  • Garnish with three whole coffee beans with whipped cream.
  • Skip the whipped cream, using only grated cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Float heavy cream on top of the coffee by pouring it slowly down the back of a spoon.
  • Make your own foam by adding hot coffee to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for approximately three to four minutes, then spoon on top of your cocktail.

A Look at the Mexican Coffee

The history of the Mexican coffee is as opaque as the coffee itself. It's known that Irish coffee really rose to fame around the 1950s despite the French, German, and Danes all drinking something quite similar as far back as the 1800s. There's a decent chance the Mexican coffee has a similar story, a drink that people have been making and sipping for hundreds of years, all while going unnoticed. However, the beauty of an unofficial cocktail means you can put your own spin on things without a friend pointing out that "that's not the actual recipe." Maybe don't invite them over to your coffee cocktail reveal party.

A Little Tequila in the Morning

Don't let peer pressure keep you from enjoying a little tequila in the morning, more specifically, in your morning coffee. At first glance, it may seem a little questionable (how does tequila even taste with coffee?!). But after that first sip hits your soul, you'll find yourself fully converted to a Mexican coffee fan.
